Twelve years ago, I set out with one mission: capture Yellowstone’s Grand Prismatic Spring like no one ever had—something bold, surreal, unforgettable. I didn’t want just another postcard shot—I wanted magic, mystery, and mood. My wife and I set out early for the overlook trail but didn’t realize the difficulty of the hike. My camera was old, my pack heavy, and the looming storm was gathering.

Whoa Nelly!

We scrambled over deadfalls, slid on loose stones, and tried to follow a “path” that was really just an ascent up some tree cluttered hill—I nearly slid down the whole hill, camera bag and all. My heart pounded louder than the wind rushing through the lodge poles. The air smelled of sulfur and pine sap, and each breath tasted metallic, charged with impending rain. The thermal heat radiated eerily through the chilled morning air. We clawed our way over the final log and landed, panting, on the cleared trail at the top of the hill, scratched but not broken.

The clouds were rolling in fast—ominous, dark, and thick. I raced up the trail while my wife rested below, scanning for a break in the pines to frame the Hot Spring. Then I saw it: a pocket between two trees. Steam rose like ghosts, and there it was—the Grand Prismatic, glowing impossibly blue, ringed in radiant orange and yellow. My eyes widened as I gave out a slight gasp of amazement at the stunning beauty of nature. The world around it felt muted, desaturated by the storm’s shadow. I set up my shot and snapped the photo just before a gang of tourists crested the deadfalls lining the path and seconds before the first raindrops fell.

That was just the beginning though of this saga. Over the next 12 years and five or six major edits, as technology evolved and I grew as an artist, I refined it—pulling the world to black and white, masking in only the vivid colors of the Hot Spring. Every adjustment brought it closer to the dream I had on that hill, until finally—finally—I had it. I stared at it on my screen and thought “This is it. This is what I had envisioned.”

Now proving time. Show it to my wife and photography group. When I did my wife smiled her sly smile, remembering that day 12 years prior we had first climbed that hill together to take this shot. And my photography group’s page exploded with praise for the image I had created. These incredible photographers saw something I had created and gushed over it. Gratefulness. That’s the best explanation I can give for the feeling of other artist’s praise for a piece of art I created. I had succeeded in my goal of creating an image of the Grand Prismatic like no one else had. I hope you like it. It’s one of my favorite all-time photos, proving it’s not always the quality of the equipment, but the determination of the artist that matters most.
