Description

Back in 2013 my wife and I set out through Yellowstone and onto the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Parkway. Our destination, Elk Island in the Grand Tetons. My goal wasn’t really to capture an amazing photo. It was to enjoy a nice day with my bride. But destiny often seems to come upon us at the most unexpected time. We stopped at Lewis Lake for a short break and some quick photos. When I saw the scene unfolding before me I knew it had to be captured. The problem was my camera, an outdated Canon with limited capabilities. Also, at that time my photography knowledge was shallow, and handling the sun—harsh and merciless—that was quickly rising would be problematic.
The lake was serene and its bank littered with multi-colored stones. Pines trees scattered throughout the little picnic area, their scent thick and resinous in the morning air. I could taste my morning Dr. Pepper, sweet and biting on my tongue. Birds called in crisp bursts, and the faint chatter of other travelers drifted on the wind.
Then near-disaster: a small busload of foreign tourists pulled up. I groaned to myself, our serene moment was about to end. Out poured traveler after traveler all with fancy Nikon cameras tied around their necks. How was I going to frame the shot with so much commotion surrounding us? But destiny was on our side. As quickly as they had pulled up and filed out, they just as quickly took their photos and filed back in and were gone. Serenity and nature’s peace returned.
The Teton Range loomed before us across the pristine lake, like jagged ivory gods against a brightening sky. But the light was wrong—too sharp, flattening the drama of the peaks. My old camera whined in protest as I tried to find settings that would do the scene justice. Shadows were swallowed by the sun, contrast blown out, details lost.
Still, I pressed the shutter.
Then came the long journey—not through wilderness, but through time. Thirteen years of trial and error. Learning shadows. Learning patience. Learning post-processing software. I chased perfection pixel by pixel until I finally carved the image from the chaos—a black-and-white portrait that whispered both power and peace.
That shot wasn’t captured in a second—it was earned over 4,745 days. It was never about the perfect conditions. It was about refusing to give up until the mountains looked how they felt: eternal.
