Description

I awoke in the autumn pre-dawn darkness, heart pounding with a singular mission: to capture the Linn Cove Viaduct from the Tanawha Trail at sunrise in a way no one else ever had. I’d studied every photo online, and none framed it quite like the vision burning in my mind. I just had to have it.

The barriers came swiftly. My feet, already aching from the plantar fasciitis I’d developed weeks ago, screamed with every step on the rough, root-tangled trail. Rocks shifted under my boots as I pushed upward in the dim light, headlamp bobbing. The sky was brightening too fast—I had to beat the sun to the overlook or the magic would be gone.

Sweat poured down my back and dripped endlessly off the brim of my old tan Tilley hat. I’d overdressed for the forecasted chill, but the morning turned hot and humid, the air thick as syrup, my black fleece vest an oppressive torture device. Pine needles crunched beneath me; the sharp scent of resin filled my lungs. Birds called sharply through the canopy as I climbed higher, lungs burning. Somewhere above, the insistent buzzing of drones sliced through the solitude—other photographers already hunting angles from the sky.

I reached the overlook breathless, only to find several other photographers up on the overlook boulders claiming the prime spots. Defeated? Never. Patience and determination are my weapons. I waited, scanning the other boulders that jutted out over the Blue Ridge Parkway below, searching for the composition only I could see.

Then I saw it: a precarious perch on slick granite behind and to the left of another photo artist, precariously close to the rock’s edge. It framed the curving bridge against the fiery autumn canopy and no one else appeared bold enough to attempt it. I climbed carefully, camera bag pulling at my shoulders. My foot slipped on the damp granite—heart stopped—I teetered on the edge, abyss yawning below. But then a hand shot out from the closest photographer. I caught it, steadied myself, gave a quick wink and nod of thanks to my unknown benefactor. I then settled into position just as the first golden rays kissed the horizon.

The viaduct glowed, colors exploding—crimson, amber, emerald, and yellow. The air tasted of cool mountain freshness despite the rising heat. I clicked the shutter again and again, nailing the shot seconds before the sun climbed higher and flattened the scene.

I’d done it. A dream realized—an iconic view, yet utterly unique, mine alone. The pain, the sweat, the near-fall—all worth it for this one transcendent frame I wasn’t sure was even possible.
