Description

The crisp autumn air of Roan Mountain State Park carried a sweetness I could almost taste—like apples just pulled from the orchard—mingling with the earthy scent of fallen leaves. My intentions were simple yet bold: to capture the stunning colors of fall in a way no one had before, a photograph that would embody the romance of northeastern Tennessee in autumn. But barriers rose around me. Cars rumbled along the winding road, breaking the serenity and occasionally jolting me from my focus. The sheer brilliance of the colors was overwhelming—fiery oranges, glowing golds, and deep crimsons so vivid they felt impossible to contain in a single frame. And then there was my own inexperience with my new Sony camera, a tool still foreign in my hands.

Still, I pressed forward, leaning into my unique attributes: my instinct for framing a scene, my ability to learn quickly, and the years I had spent as a graphic designer honing editing skills that could draw out hidden beauty. The sights around me demanded attention—sunlight filtering through amber leaves like liquid fire, a green meadow glowing in the distance, the stream’s water rippling with cool silver tones. I could hear the whisper of the wind brushing through branches, the crunch of leaves under my boots, and Cody, my ever-curious Schnauzer, snuffling excitedly at the ground.

Disaster nearly struck when Cody lunged suddenly at a passing squirrel, yanking the leash tied loosely around my wrist. My camera slipped, nearly tumbling to the rocky ground. My heart leapt, but I caught it just in time, knuckles white from the tightness of the grip. My wife Becky’s voice cut through the adrenaline, firm but warm: urging me to hurry, reminding me the sunlight was fading fast.

And then, it happened. The chaos quieted. And a sudden burst of golden light spilled through the trees, igniting the canopy and setting the leaves ablaze. I found the angle, the frame, the moment. I pressed the shutter, and in that instant, I knew. The image was more than a photograph—it was a dream realized.

Later, through careful editing, I brought the image to life—balancing colors, shaping shadows, pulling the wild brilliance into harmony. What remained was not just a photo. It revealed the romantic, glowing heart of autumn in northeastern Tennessee, captured forever in a single frame.
